Today is officially the Autumnal Equinox, AKA the first day of fall. The length of our night hours tonight will exactly match the length of our daytime hours, but then...alas... days will grow continually shorter over the next three months. I'm sure that you've noticed that the leaves have begun to change... soon we'll, once again, be inspired by the awesome beauty of the fall season, here in Rugby, TN.
Saturday Benefit
The Benefit dinner and Silent Auction for Steve and Annie Bell was a huge success. Pictures below show just a few of the activities. Steve and Annie have been longtime Rugby supporters and very talented crafts people. The music was provided by Butch Hodgkins, Doug Peircy, and Gerald Hanwright and others.
Donna reported that EVERYONE in Rugby needs to be thanked... even folks who weren't able to make the event. Tom & Benita were so helpful, and gave of their time and items, even though they were away this weekend. Rita, Cheryl, Eric, Jim, Sharon, Lavonne, Charles, Jim, Dorcas, & Ted... and so many others all helped in so many ways. And of course so many folks donated items for the auction, and for the cakewalk, and brought finger food. We also need to thank Appalachia Habitat for Humanity in Robbins, who so generously donated all the sodas for the event. And our wonderful musicians, who really make it an Event with a capital E. Everyone had a wonderful time.... and everyone agrees that it was "lots of fun!"
Fall Wildflowers - follow-up

As a follow-up to the Fall Wildflower Workshop, Eric reported that, at the meadow on the Lankford property, the group saw several Gulf Fritillary butterflies (Agraulis vanillae) feeding on thistles. Knowledgeable folks on the hike believed, and a check of the Internet confirmed, that there was no documented record of this butterfly in Morgan County (or in Scott or Fentress). The larvae of this butterfly feed exclusively on passion flower, which was also growing profusely on the property. (Picture above sent by Vi)
Evening of Dance
Three couples met on Thursday night at the Friendly House for an informal evening of dance. Music was provided by Tom Howell. He did a super job playing four dance tunes and sight reading two after arriving. Dancers reviewed some dances that they had danced before, trying to reinforce the steps and moves that they had learned at previous dances. Eric Wilson also requested The Black Nag, a three couple dance, that our group did with confidence and enthusiasm. Instructor Mary Hemminger promised to keep in touch through Rugby Week regarding further local dance opportunities. She also requested that it would help her to know if Friday or Saturday is better for get-togethers. As there has been a lot of activity in Rugby, she doesn't want to compete with any other thing that is going on.
Rugby Connection
Well, five of our neighbors recently returned from ten days in England visiting, most importantly, Rugby! Below is a picture taken by Julian Bankston, showing John & Kathy Hicks and Jim & Nora Meadows, awaiting a tour of Warwick Castle. The history of that castle stretches back over 1,000 years... and we thought our Rugby had a long history!
Art Class
Learn to paint a complete picture of Victorian Roses in a one day oil "Wet-On-Wet" class by Mara Trmbo. The class is presently scheduled for Saturday 9/27/08, 10:00am to 4:30pm Central, at the Artist's Corner in Crossville. If minimum of 4 attendees not reached by Thursday, class will be moved to Rugby home art studio same date with times switched to Eastern time. Call Mara for details on (423) 628-6591.
The Buck Stops Here
No longer will we need to associate Harry Truman with the expression, "The Buck Stops Here". Rugby now has it on good authority that the proverbial buck now stops with Annie Patterson. Donna reported that Annie Patterson may be the only person most of us will ever know who was hit by a deer, where there was no vehicle involved - just Annie and the deer. She was walking up the path towards their driveway at night, and a deer came out of their side yard and collided with Annie just as they both reached the driveway. The collision knocked them about 6' apart and they both went down, but the deer got up and ran away a lot quicker than Annie. She luckily wasn't seriously hurt, but really bruised up and mightily sore. So, Annie told Donna that her new motto is "The Buck Stops Here"!
