July 20Appalachian Writers SeriesJoin us at 7 p.m. Eastern/6 Central for readings and book signings with author Wayne Caldwell. http://www.waynecaldwell.com/  Free.  Caldwell is a 2013 James Still Award winner and brings us historical fiction.  His novels Cataloochee and Requiem by Fire tell of the creation and development of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and of the lives of the people who must leave their homes to make way for it.

Sat. July 27Appalachian Basketry Class – Learn to make a “Beanpot Basket” – named for its shape, this round basket is easy for a beginner, and fun for anyone. Registration required at least 7 days before class.  $32 or $42.  Registration forms available through Historic Rugby. 

Sat. July 27Monthly Volunteer Meeting – Topic: living history, 3:30 p.m./2:30 Central. Location TBA.


Sat. July 27 - White Elephant Bingo at the Harrow Road Café, 6:30 Eastern/5:30 Central. Bring some luck and an item from home for a prize contribution. We'll supply cards and markers. Players may have dinner, but at least need to buy one drink of some sort. Try this fun night away from the same old thing!

Sat. Aug. 3 - Community Potluck - 7:00 p.m. at the Friendly House

Sun. Aug. 11 - Appalachian Writers Series - Join us at 3 p.m. for readings and book signings with fantasy writer Alex Bledsoe.  He will discuss his novels The Hum and A Wisp of a Thing, tales of the Tufa, a mysterious people living in east Tennessee.  The legends surrounding them recall the Melungeons of Hancock County, but there is much more to the story.  You'll want to visit Historic Rugby's Thomas Hughes Library after his talk, just to make sure......  
 

Sat. Aug. 24 - British Motorcar Show - see British motorcars, old and new
 
 Sat. Sept. 21 - Appalachian Heritage Day.  See traditional crafts and old-time skills of mountain living on the lawn of Historic Uffington House
