A small group, led by Jane Logan, went on an excursion Saturday to Frozen Head to see some spectacular late wildflowers. Carrie Thornthwaite reports that “the hike at Frozen Head was awesome. Only Tom, Benita, Jane and I hiked, but wildflowers were almost every inch of the way to the top of the mountain.”

Above is a collage of wildflower photos from Carrie. In addition, Carrie has a slideshow of all 37 pictures at http://www.flickr.com/photos/thornthwaite/sets/72157617352139630/show/
When the slideshow starts, just click on the Show info link at the top right, to see the flower names.
Saturday night Bob and Pandy English led a well-attended workshop on frogs and toads – and, thanks to Linda Konig’s earlier scouting efforts, they identified six different frog calls at the Newbury House pond and a marshy spot in Beacon Hill.
The Hester clan was seen riding their bikes over to the Harrow Road Café for dinner Saturday night. And Jodye Weiler was seen driving through the village in her golf cart on Sunday.
George and I walked down to the Meeting of the Waters on Sunday. The water had receded enough at the rocks near the Meeting of the Waters to allow us to do the full loop around.

Scott County Historian Dies
By George Zepp
Several Rugby folks who knew her were saddened to hear of the April 19 death of Irene Baker, of nearby Huntsville, at age 84. The Scott County historian was the hard-working organizer of that county’s impressive archives operation and longtime president of the Scott County Historical Society. Since Rugby lies partially within Scott County, and since the Rugby newspapers in their day carried much news of the general region, Irene was always interested in Rugby and its families. Her late husband, J.T. Baker, was a former board member of Historic Rugby Inc.
At her memorial reception in Huntsville last Wednesday, one of the photos on display showed Irene on the front porch of the Board of Aid building in Rugby.
Her graveside service at Mossop Cemetery mentioned her care for stray animals, and even stray people needing a handout. Little known, and not disclosed at the service, was her pen friendship of several years with a federal prisoner who is a convicted bank robber. The fellow, a bottle collector since his youth, was aided and encouraged by Irene to become a writer for bottle collecting magazines. Irene got an inquiry letter from him about a former bottling plant in Scott County. She researched it, sent him lots of material, and continued a correspondence with him going back nearly a decade. (Irene didn’t ask or know what his offense was until recent years.) Through her help, the inmate is rehabilitating himself by actually getting articles published by niche magazines. He remains in prison, but said he is hoping to “someday dedicate a book to her.” She was a true helper to all interested in history.

Wanted - Adoption of Friendship Cake starter. Mara has been given a recipe which unbeknownst to her would end up multiplying into 3 cake bases and 2 "starters" to pass onto friends. After feeding the starter for 30 days on a diet of fruit and sugar Bob was beginning to suspect Mara was up to brewing moonshine. The gestation period is now over, “I have 3 bun(t)s in the oven, literally, and need two friends to breed the next batch. Any takers?” Call for the starter and typed recipe, they need a good home soon! 423-628-6591.
