“Josie” Performance Coming Up

This Saturday, July 25, Kentucky actress and folk musician Jennifer Rose presents the life, in story and song, of a rural Appalachian woman from the age of 14 to 50. Come share the feminine side of the Appalachian story, complete with home births, personal tragedies and determined survival. “Can't nobody escape their history,” says the older Josie. The show is Saturday at 7:45 p.m. at the Rebecca Johnson Theatre in Rugby. $14. Call Historic Rugby for reservations at 423-628-2441 or Toll-Free 888-214-3400.

Weekend Wrap-up

Rugby has been enjoying unusually cool weather lately. It is amazing to have so many July days where early morning temperatures are in the 50’s.

Organizer Dorcus McBrayer says there were some interesting things at Saturday’s Farmer’s Market, including “some yummy Morgan County corn, mint plants and samples of Jessica Ericison's tasty goodies along with the other seasonal vegetables. She says they are changing the time for the market to 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. beginning this Saturday.

Carrie Thornthwaite provided a photo from the Kudzu vine basketry workshop with instructor Fuzzy Orange.

Carrie also took this photo from Saturday’s hike around Rugby which was led by Eric Wilson. Weather for the hike was great with the cooler temperatures and overcast skies.

Harley Haven?

Rugby's a popular spot these days with bikers/motorcyclists on account of the winding country highways to get here. With state repaving to be finished soon on the seven miles from Elgin west to here, the final smooth surface may add even more attraction this summer. On Sunday alone nearly two dozen bikes were parked at the restaurant and in front of the Board of Aid. Here are a few of them.

A flyer was posted over the mail boxes last week about the sale of Truro Cottage in Beacon Hill. Nature Notes
By Linda Konig

Last night I heard a strange intermittent call from the woods between my house and the old Idylwilde place ( a house site between where I live and Rugby founder Thomas Hughes’ mother’s home, Uffington House).

It didn’t sound like any owl I’ve ever heard, but then sometimes they make strange calls unlike their usual calls. I’d like to know more about our owls, and I hope I’ll get the chance to get “up close and personal” with some hawks and owls a couple of weeks from now.

Historic Rugby Inc. has scheduled an Aug. 1 workshop called “Understanding Birds of Prey and Reptiles” where we’ll see live animals up close as well as watch videos of them. These raptors, etc., are surprisingly beautiful when seen close at hand instead of flying through the air or partially hidden by rocks and underbrush.

A few years ago, Katie Cottrell and Kathy Strunk came from the Clinch River Raptor Center, and they’re coming back. It was a golden opportunity for Donna Heffner – our accomplished gourd-burning artist – to sketch the screech owls, barred owls, great horned owls, red-tailed hawks, etc.

This year John Byrd will be with Katie and Kathy to show off some of the Center’s reptiles. I don’t know what he’ll have, but maybe we’ll see some interesting nonpoisonous snakes or some turtles. (I love turtles!)

These animals have all been wounded, rescued and recovered, but are unable to return to the wild due to broken wings, etc.
