History Night this Friday
The history trip to Oliver Springs has been postponed until later in the year because their museums are closed for winter. Instead, at this Friday’s meeting Benita Howell will talk about Christian Socialism, the movement that involved Rugby founder Thomas Hughes and others. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Friendly House, this Friday, February 13.

Benita says she will talk briefly about the principles and aims of the Christian Socialist movement begun in 1848 and its key figures: Frederick Denison Maurice, John Ludlow, Charles Kingsley (pictured in the drawing), Edward Vansittart Neale, and Thomas Hughes. Economic cooperation, a key aspect of Christian Socialism, flourished in England in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Benita will lead a discussion about how cooperation and other Christian Socialist principles were applied (or not) in Rugby.

Dancing
Friday night’s English Country Dancing drew a crowd again. Mary Hemminger says they are having fun and getting ready for their next dance on Saturday, February 21, at 7:30 p.m. The dancers are learning historical English country dances that the original colonists surely had heard of, if not danced. Most of the dances come from the 1600's and 1700's.

The semester ends on March 21. The dancers will discuss where they go from here. They hope to be able to demonstrate some of these dances to the Rugby community in the next couple of months.

Mary says “Come join us!”

Nature Notes by Linda Konig
There is an old, old belief that still lingers in Appalachia that birds choose their mate on Valentine’s Day. This folk belief goes back to medieval days in Europe. I don’t know about most of the birds, but in case of some of the other wildlife, I’d say that romance is already in the air.

Wouldn’t you know it; notoriously prolific rabbits have their first litter in February. Gray Squirrels mate in January also and their cousins, the Flying Squirrels, mate in late winter/early spring. Owls start hooting and calling for mates in late January. River otters, too, mate about the same time as the squirrels. Skunks, as you probably guessed by a recent increase in road kills, have started roaming more at night. Pepe le Phew is enjoying “cherchez la femme.” Coyotes, possums, groundhogs – all start wooing in February. Meanwhile our local bobcats mated back in January and will probably have Kits in February or March.

And frogs – well, I can’t believe we’re not hearing the Wood Frogs’ courtin’ songs yet. We usually start hearing them on sunny days in January.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
