Cedar Waxwings Visit Rugby

Butch and Cheryl Hodgkins were surprised on Sunday by 40 to 50 beautiful Cedar Waxwings stopping by for lunch in one of their cedar trees at Onderdonk Cottage. Cheryl wrote “Its fondness for the small cones of the eastern red cedar give this bird its common name. The birds are very colorful, with yellow tips on their tail, crests on their head, and black masks. They were probably on their migratory trip back to Canada. They are considered a songbird.” They were able to take this photo with a small camera through their front window.

Nature Notes
By Linda Konig
Another week of observing Spring's unfolding, another week of "firsts."
Sunday, March 22 - This afternoon brought the first carpenter bee buzzing about, looking for a likely spot to build her tunnel in which she'll lay her eggs.
Monday, March 23 - The purple martins have returned from Central America to their houses at the four-way stop at Allardt. Saw the first common purple violet in my yard.
Tuesday, March 24 - Teresa Coker and I picked "creasy" greens in a cornfield. She cooked them, and they were delicious and a spring tonic.
Wednesday, March 25 - Glimpsed some Cypress Spurge blooming on Brewstertown Road. Found first bluets in the 'island" in front of Laurel Dale Cemetery. The tiny bluets always appear before the regular bluets and are actually pink-lavender instead of blue, have a red-violet throat. The first Dutchman's Breeches are blooming in one of the wildflower beds at the Lindens.
Thursday, March 26 - Went to Frozen Head State Park and found Halberd-Leaf Yellow Violets, Rue Anemone, Star Chickweed, and Spring Beauties on one of the trails. Myriads of Trout Lilly leaves, etc. Also saw three different millipedes in broad daylight! The extreme wetness must be bringing them out. Sweet Betsy trillium blooming in my own backyard.
