Lavonne Gibbs reports:
“On Monday March 23, 2009, Christ Church members and friends finished painting two rooms for Robert Monday. 17 different people helped for several hours or several sessions to clean and paint walls and woodwork. Habitat of Morgan & Scott County used their funds and workers along with contributions from Christ Church to repair the floor and ceiling and walls that were broken down from a badly leaking roof. Habitat provided a beautiful new green metal roof, and back porch floor and door along with work on heat electrical and plumbing systems. Robert is very pleased to have his dear house safe, dry and repaired. He says ‘They did excellent.’ "

“A big thank you to the following people: Linda Konig, Gerald Hanwright, John Hicks, Lavonne and Charles Gibbs, Benita and Tom Howell, Don Weaver, Mike Hill, Roland Caldwell, Ron Jackson, Debbie Harris, Judy Newport, Mary Hemminger, Jodye Weiler, Peggy McClellan, Doug Piercy and family of Bill, Linda and Tiffany Jones.”

Nature Notes
By Linda Konig
The Rose family of wildflowers has many varied members, among them blackberries, Japanese spirea, hardhack, cinquefoils, and - well - roses. They also include strawberries, some real and some "fakes." Unfortunately, I haven't found any sweet ones yet, only the "imitators," but I have heard the genuine wild strawberries are sweeter by far than the "store-bought."
When we were children, by brother David and I would find Indian strawberries in our yard and, ever hopeful, we'd eat them, but they were always dry and tasteless. We wondered why. Later, I learned they were called Indian strawberries and wrongly assumed that Cherokees had eaten them. But, still later, I learned that they're called Indian because they came from India originally. They're plentiful in some Rugby yards, also. In the summer, the little yellow flowers will turn to small red berries that look like miniature strawberries.
Another "strawberry" plant with yellow flowers is blooming now in the woods, and I saw some the other day at Leatherwood Ford. This was the first time I had seen them, and I thought they might be in the St. Johnswort family since the five-petalled flowers have so many prominent stamens. Consulting my books, I found it was Barren Strawberry, so called because its small red strawberry-like fruits are tasteless.
Last year in North Carolina in April, Vi and I ran across a few blooming wild strawberry plants along the Blue Ridge Parkway. They have white blooms. Now, if I can just make it back in May....
